A WEEK BEFORE

FADE IN:

EXT. HOUSE – NIGHT

INSERT – TITLE CARD

MONDAY

Scott Phren pulls up to a house. The house’s lights are out inside but there are people inside with flash lights. It’s an obvious crime scene. There are cop car’s lights flashing, cops walking in and out of the house, and there is caution tape everywhere. There are bystanders watching in awe, trying to get a glimpse of what is going on. Scott walks up to the front door and is greeted by his partner Michael.

MICHAEL
Got another one for ya to
solve.

Scott mildly laughs. They both enter the house.

INT. HOUSE – NIGHT

Everything in the house seems to be normal. Scott looks around and Michael directs him to the crime scene.

They enter the living room/kitchen. There is a dead person lying face down with his limbs sprawled out on the floor. There is a broken glass cup and a bar lying next to him. The guy has a major cut in his head there is a lot of blood on the ground. However, he is not still bleeding from the head due to the fact it had happened earlier. Scott kneels over to inspect the body.

SCOTT
Whatta we got?

MICHAEL
Another homicide. The CSI’s
haven’t got exact cause of
death but uh...I’m gonna go
with the huge indent in his
head.

SCOTT
What’s the indention from?

MICHAEL
Eh, some metal bar, not real
sure what kind of bar it is
though, just seems like any
average ole bar to me though.

Scott scans the crime scene trying to get any kind of clue.

MICHAEL
Any ideas?

SCOTT
Nope. Nothing yet.

Another detective steps in the front door and walks up to Scott and Michael.

BRETT
(sarcastically)
So the FAMOUS Scott Phren has
arrived eh?

MICHAEL
Don’t be jealous Brett.

BRETT
Jealous? Michael, you’ve been
his partner for what, 5 years
now? And, you wanna know what’s
funny? it always seems to be
Scott that solves the cases.

Michael doesn’t respond.

BRETT
Now, if someone were to label
someone jealous, wouldn’t it
be more correct to label you?

MICHAEL
I’m his partner Brett. We
are a team, we work together.
It’s a joint effort. Which I’m
sure you know nothing about.

BRETT
(sarcastically)
Ohhh. Partners. That’s right.

SCOTT
C’mon guys, we are here to do
a job. Let’s do it.

BRETT
(sarcastically)
I’ll leave the “partners” alone.

Brett walks off.

MICHAEL
Jerk.

Scott eyes squint while he looks at the victim and he notices something.

SCOTT
(quietly)
I know this guy.

Staring at the victim and thinking.

MICHAEL
From where?

SCOTT
I’m not sure.

Scott squints his eyes even harder to try to remember the man.

SCOTT
Oh! The other day at the
supermarket...

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. SUPERMARKET - DAY

FLASHBACK of Scott at the supermarket loading groceries into his truck. Scott is loading his groceries in the passenger side door or his truck when a shopping cart rolls into and bangs the other side of Scott’s truck. Scott looks over and sees the cart rolling backwards slowly. A man on his cell phone turns around hoping that Scott didn’t see it but then he realizes Scott and he trys to plays it off and simply nod and wave. Scott gets annoyed and upset but the guy just ignores him and drives off.

SCOTT (V.O.)
...I was loading my groceries
into my truck and this guy’s
cart ran right into my truck.
Put a pretty nice dent in it.
It wasn’t a big deal but the
guy was really rude.

Flashback ends.

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. HOUSE – NIGHT

Brett is standing a few feet behind them. Scott and Michael aren’t aware he is there.

MICHAEL
(seriously)
You know that makes you a
suspect.

Scott looks down at Michael to see if he is serious and mildly laughs.

Brett’s eyes go on Scott and Michael.

SCOTT
I don’t think a minor dent
is grounds for homicide.

MICHAEL
(jokingly)
Ha, I know man, I’m just
messin with ya.

Brett pulls out a notebook and writes something down and walks off.

Scott puts on latex gloves and bends down and points at the metal bar.

SCOTT
What’s this?

MICHAEL
That’s the supposed bar.

Scott gets up. He snaps off the gloves and tosses them in a nearby trash can.

SCOTT
I’m gonna head home and see
if I can finish up some stuff
on the last case. I have this
weird feeling that these past
murders are linked with this
one for some reason.

MICHAEL
Alright, I’m gonna stay here and
finish up with the CSI’s. If you
get anything call me.

SCOTT
Will do.

Michael goes back to the victim and starts talking to a Crime Scene Investigator while Scott walks outside to his truck and drives off.

CUT TO:

INT. SCOTT’S HOUSE – NIGHT

Scott walks in with a folder in his hand. He takes off his coat and loosens his tie. He tosses his wallet and keys onto his entry table. He tosses the folder onto the kitchen table, gets a glass of water, and sits down. He opens the folder and starts reading and marking things with his pen.

FADE OUT:

FADE IN:

A man is sitting down watching television. It goes to commercial and he gets up goes into the other room.

EXT. HOUSE OF CRIME SCENE – NIGHT

CAMERA SHOT - feet only and moving up to the torso of a man standing at the curb showing the house. He walks up to the front door with a metal bar in his hand.

INT. HOUSE OF CRIME SCENE – NIGHT

The man walks back in with a glass of water. He is startled and drops the glass.

MAN
(shocked)
What the hell.

CAMERA SHOT back of man and moves up showing the man’s back head and revealing another man across the room with a white mask on and bar in his hand. The masked man stands there and then quickly approaches the other man lifting the bar and swings at the man’s head.

ABRUPT CUT TO:

INT. SCOTT’S HOUSE – NIGHT

Scott’s head shoots up from the table. He was dreaming. He doesn’t move for a couple of seconds until he realizes it was just a dream. He rubs his eyes and tosses the pen down. He takes a quick drink of the water. Then he heads to his bed.

FADE OUT:

EXT. POLICE STATION PARKING LOT – DAY

INSERT – TITLE CARD

TUESDAY

Scott pulls into parking lot, gets the folder out of his backseat, and heads into police department.

INT. POLICE STATION – DAY

Scott tosses folder on his desk and heads to get a coke out of the coke machine. Michael turns around and notices him.

MICHAEL
You get anything last night?

SCOTT
Nah, I fell asleep.

MICHAEL
This case makes the days seem
like years.

SCOTT
Something like that.

The chief of police steps outside his office and calls Michael and Scott in.

CAPTAIN MENTIS
Scott..Michael..come in here
for a second.

They both walk in. The chief instructs them to sit and they take a seat.

SCOTT
Good morning Captain Mentis.

CAPTAIN MENTIS
Good morning. What do you have
for me?

SCOTT
So far, nothing. No ties, no
clues. And of course no suspects.

MICHAEL
I mean, he seems like a random
killer.

CAPTAIN MENTIS
Michael, there is no such thing
as a random killer. They kill
always have a reason, whether
it be insanity, personal desire,
revenge, or have a small temper.
There’s a reason why this person
is doing this and I need you guys
to catch him.

Scott and Michael don’t say anything.

CAPTAIN MENTIS
We have a witness.

Scott and Michael’s eyes get big.

CAPTAIN MENTIS
She called in this morning.
Got a possible vehicle type.
You guys go ahead and head
down there.

Scott and Michael walk out and the Captain Mentis shouts at them.

CAPTAIN MENTIS
(shouts)
And get me something!

CUT TO:

INT. SCOTT’S TRUCK – DAY

Scott and Michael are heading to the witness’s house.

MICHAEL
I don’t understand this guy.

SCOTT
Who?

MICHAEL
The killer.

A car quickly pulls out in front of Scott and Scott slams on the break. Scott quickly puts his hand on his head and tenses up as if he had a headache.

The camera blacks out for a quick second.

SCOTT
Dammit. Stupid people.

Michael is still on his train of thought.

MICHAEL
He leaves us no sign, no
pattern, no prints, nothing.
It’s like he knows what we
are looking for.

SCOTT
This case is going to make me
go insane.

MICHAEL
Heh. I’ve never seen you work
so hard on a case.

SCOTT
There’s something that tells
me that this is going to be
big.

Scott gets quiet and mumbles to himself

SCOTT
This is going to be big.

Michael notices the witness’s house.

MICHAEL
There’s the house.

Scott pulls over and Michael and Scott head up to the door.

EXT. FRONT PATIO OF WITNESS – DAY

Michael knocks on door. No answer. He knocks again and a lady slowly opens door with chain lock on. They flash their badges and she opens the door.

SCOTT
Good afternoon ma’am, my name
is Scott Phren and this is my
partner Michael Schizo and we
are detectives from the OKC
Police Dept. and we were
wondering if we could ask you
a few questions.

LADY
Absolutely, come on in. My name
is Lucy Bleuler by the way.

INT. LADY’S HOUSE – DAY

Scott and Michael walk in.

LADY
Have a seat. Would you like
something to drink.

Scott and Michael have a seat.

MICHAEL
That’s not necessary. This
won’t take too long, we only
have a few questions.

The lady calls back to her husband and he comes in and also has a seat. Eugene shakes Scott’s and Michael’s hand and they introduce each other.

HUSBAND
Eugene.

SCOTT
Scott. It’s nice to meet you.

MICHAEL
Michael.

SCOTT
Go ahead and tells us what you
saw last night.

LUCY
Well, Eugene was watching tv
and I was cleaning dishes, could
you of guessed that, and I
noticed a vehicle pull up into
what I thought was our drive way.

SCOTT
Did you see what type of vehicle
it was or what color it was?

LUCY
Well, I walked outside on the
porch and it had driven down the
street and had pulled around
and parked on the other side of
the road. It looked black but
it was dark so I’m not sure at
all.

MICHAEL
Did you notice anything else?

LUCY
Well, a guy got out and he had
a white mask on and something
in his hand.

SCOTT
A white mask?

LUCY
Ya, just a plain white mask.
He also had black clothes on.

Scott writes this down.

EUGENE
Also, Lucy came in because
she got scared so I went out
there and he was already
leaving. He couldn’t of been
there more than two minutes.

SCOTT
Is there anything else you
can possibly think of?

Lucy and Eugene look at each other and shake their heads.

MICHAEL
Well, thank you folks very
much. If you do happen to
think of anything else, you
can call us at this number.

Michael hands them a card with their names and numbers on it and points to the numbers.

LUCY
We will and thank you.

Scott and Michael get up.

SCOTT
Again, thank you. You have
guys have a nice day.

EXT. LACY AND EUGENE’S HOUSE – DAY

Scott and Michael walk outside to their truck and Lucy and Eugene stand at the door way and wave them off as they drive off.

INSERT – TITLE CARD

WEDNESDAY

CUT TO:

INT. SCOTT’S HOUSE – DAWN

Scott just woke up and got ready and is about to head to work. He gets his wallet and keys and heads out.

EXT. SCOTT’S HOUSE – DAWN

CAMERA ANGLE on bumper showing that its bent then pans to the right to show Scott walking through his grass to his truck that is parked along the side of the road.

Scott notices the dent and gets up close to inspect it.

SCOTT
(confused)
What the...?

Scott looks around to see if anyone was around to see if they saw what happened. He gets in truck and heads to work.

INT. SCOTT’S CAR – DAWN

He notices a sound coming from the engine and doesn’t know what it is. He makes a phone call.

SCOTT
Hello...Hey, Yousef...are you
busy today?...Okay, sweet...Well,
someone hit me this morning and
I hear a weird noise and I was
wondering if you could check it
out to see if something was wrong.
..Ya, I can swing by right now if
you want...sounds good, I’ll be
there in a sec...Okay, thanks
man...Okay, see you in a sec.

Scott pulls up to Yousef’s house and Yousef comes outside. They shake hands and greet each other.

EXT. YOUSEF’S HOUSE – DAWN

SCOTT
Hey man, how ya been?

YOUSEF
Good good, and youself?

SCOTT
Eh, work’s been tiring lately.

YOUSEF
Ya. Well, pop the hood and I’ll
see if I can fix your problem.

Yousef looks up and smiles and then laughs. Scott laughs.

Scott pops the hood and looked at the engine as if he knew what Yousef was doing. Yousef looks around for a sec and notices something.

YOUSEF
Heh, I found your sound
problem.

SCOTT
What’s that?

YOUSEF
Well, I’m guessing you hit
something right?

SCOTT
Sorta, I came out this
morning and my truck was
like this. I guess someone
ran into me and drove off.

YOUSEF
Nah, this isn’t from a car.

SCOTT
(confused)
It isn’t?

YOUSEF
Nope, it looks like you
hit a-

Scott’s phone rings and interrupts Yousef. Scott looks at it and mouths to Yousef that he must take the call, Yousef nods and goes back into the engine to look more.

SCOTT
Hello?

EXT. LAKE HEFNER – DAWN

Michael is at another crime scene.

MICHAEL
We have another.

EXT. YOUSEF’S HOUSE – DAWN

SCOTT
Another what?

EXT. LAKE HEFNER – DAWN

MICHAEL
Another murder.

EXT. YOUSEF’S HOUSE – DAWN

SCOTT
Oh my. Where? What happened?

EXT. LAKE HEFNER – DAWN

MICHAEL
Down here at Lake Hefner. Seems
like a hit and run, but whoever
hit the guy did it intentionally.

EXT. YOUSEF’S HOUSE – DAWN

SCOTT
How do you know?

EXT. LAKE HEFNER – DAWN

MICHAEL
He veered 20 feet off the road
and onto the jogging path.

EXT. YOUSEF’S HOUSE – DAWN

SCOTT
Hey, I’ll head up there in a
sec. Someone hit my car this
morning-

Yousef looks up and smiles.

SCOTT
-or something hit my car and
I’m having a friend take a
look at it.

EXT. LAKE HEFNER – DAWN

MICHAEL
Alright, I think we’ve got a
couple witnesses.

EXT. YOUSEF’S HOUSE – DAWN

SCOTT
Well at least there is some
good news. Okay, I’ll head up
there in a bit.

EXT. LAKE HEFNER – DAWN

MICHAEL
See ya then.

EXT. YOUSEF’S HOUSE – DAWN

SCOTT
See ya.

Scott gets off the phone and Yousef picks up where he left off.

YOUSEF
Anyways, I would say you hit
a deer but its too low for a
deer.

Yousef thinks for a second.

YOUSEF
(jokingly)
Heh, it’s like you hit a person
bending over.

Scott eyes quickly look up and Scott has an akward look on his face.

YOUSEF
Well, back to the noise. You
got a leak in your radiator.
And, you can either buy a new
one or go up to a hardware
store and pick up some Stop
Leak, it’s only a couple bucks.

Scott is still in a little shock.

SCOTT
(softly)
Ya..I’ll do that. Hey, thanks
Yousef.

Yousef wipes off his hands and tosses the rag down and shuts Scott’s hood.

YOUSEF
Hey, anything for a good friend
(MORE)
YOUSEF (cont’d)
right?
(seriously)
I charge 25 bucks an hour.

They both laugh. Scott gets in his truck and Yousef waves Scott off. Scott is about to head to hardware store to pick up the Stop Leak real quick.

CUT TO:

INT. ACE HARDWARE – DAY

Scott heads through the isles and picks up some Stop Leak. He heads up to the cash register to pay.

STORE CLERK
Is that it?

SCOTT
Yep.

Scott hands her a twenty dollar bill. The Stop Leak costs $8.93 and she hands him back $1.07.

SCOTT
Uh, I gave you a twenty.

STORE CLERK
No you gave me a ten.

Scott slightly laughs as though she was joking and starts to get frustrated.

SCOTT
Ma’am, I handed you a twenty
dollar bill, you put it in
the cash register, and got out
a dollar and seven cents. That’s
not what you owe me.

STORE CLERK
(rudely)
Sir, you gave me a ten.

Scott takes a deep breath. Exhales slowly and lets it go.

SCOTT
The only reason I’m not going
to do anything, is because
I’m in a bit of a hurry. Can
I have my receipt?

She hands him the receipt and he begins to walk off and then turns around to say something.

SCOTT
(pissed off)
You know...oh never mind.

Scott walks out and heads to the crime scene.

EXT. LAKE HEFNER – DAY

Scott gets out of his truck and heads over to talk to Michael. They talk as they walk to the dead guy.

MICHAEL
What took so long?

SCOTT
I had to stop by the hardware
store to pick up something for
my truck.

MICHAEL
You find out what happened?

SCOTT
No, by the way, I’ve had bad
luck with people lately?

MICHAEL
Oh ya?

SCOTT
Well, that lady at the checkout
cut me short 10 bucks?

MICHAEL
What?

SCOTT
Eh, not worth telling.

MICHAEL
Okay. So here’s the deal. Like
I said before, it’s obvious
the guy was meant to be hit.

Michael points reenacts the car path.

MICHAEL
The road is right there, and
our guy turned about a 45
degree angle to the right,
directly where Mr. Jogger was.
He almost survived acutally.

They both bend down to look at the guy.

SCOTT
How’s that?

MICHAEL
Well, the way he fell, and
what appears to be his shoulder
and hip bone to be broken, he
had to of leaned over before our
guy hit him. He must have saw him
in the corner of his eye.

They stand up and look around.

SCOTT
Michael.

MICHAEL
Yes?

SCOTT
You think all of these homicides
lately are linked?

MICHAEL
You mean the same killer?

SCOTT
Yeah.

MICHAEL
If I were to go by evidence, no.
But, like you, I have a feeling
they are for some odd reason, I
don’t know why. I mean there is
no reasoning behind them being
linked.

SCOTT
Yeah, I know what you mean.
MICHAEL
Oh! So we have some witnesses.

SCOTT
Where are they at?

MICHAEL
I don’t know, they ran off.

Michael surveys the area to look for him and Scott sees a guy talking to a police officer and points it out to Michael.

SCOTT
That him?

MICHAEL
Ya, let’s go see if he has
anything.

They walk over there and the guy finishes up with the cop and starts to walk off.

SCOTT
Hey!

The guy turns around and they signal him to come over.

SCOTT
We are from the OKC Police
Dept. and we were wondering
if it would be ok to ask you
a few questions.

He shakes their hands.

GUY
Ya, sure. Jeff.

SCOTT
Nice to meet you, my name is
Scott and this is my partner
Michael. Where were you at
when the man was hit?

He points to some trees.

JEFF
I had been down at the lake
fishing this morning and headed
up to the car when I saw a guy
swerve off the road. I didn’t
notice that he had hit someone
right away until I walked a
little further and saw a man
lying down.

MICHAEL
Could you tell what kind of
vehicle it was?

JEFF
It was a truck, but it was too
dark to get a color. I really
wasn’t paying too much attention,
just wondering what would make
a man swerve like that. I thought
there was something in the road.
Guess not.

SCOTT
Ya, that wasn’t the case at all.
What did you do when you saw the
man.

JEFF
Uh, once I saw him I ran over to
see if he was okay. He wasn’t
moving but I thought he was
breathing, I’m not sure. I called
the cops immediately and waited
by him.

SCOTT
Is there anything else you can
think of?

Brett arrives at the scene and parks next to Scott. While walking by, he notices Scott’s truck.

BRETT
(yells)
SCOTT.

Scott turns around.

SCOTT
Hey, it was nice meeting
you and thank you.

Scott walks over there while Michael finishes up with the witness.

MICHAEL
If there is anything you
forget to tell us just give
us a holler.

He hands him the card and points to number.

JEFF
Thank you.

MICHAEL
Thank you.

Scott gets over to Brett and Michael is jogging behind to catch up.

BRETT
(suspicously)
What happened to your truck.

SCOTT
I’m not sure. Woke up this
morning with it like that.

BRETT
(sarcastically)
Hmm, weird isn’t it.

SCOTT
Brett, what are you trying
to say?

BRETT
Oh nothing.

Brett gets back in his car and drives off. Michael catches up to Scott.

MICHAEL
What was that about?

SCOTT
(mad and mildly
worried)
Nothing.

MICHAEL
Heh, someone did mess up
your car.

SCOTT
Oh ya, I gotta use that Stop
Leak stuff.

Scott gets it out and takes it around front, he trys to spray it but the spray top is broken.

SCOTT
Oh great.

MICHAEL
What?

SCOTT
Ugh, it’s broken. I’m gonna
head by there and replace this
and head home for the day.

MICHAEL
Okay, see you tomorrow.

Scott gets in car and waves him off.

INT. SCOTT’S CAR - DAY

On the way to the hardware store, he has a flash back at a stop light.

CUT TO:

EXT. LAKE HEFNER – NIGHT

FLASHBACK of a truck driving and then swerving off the road. It’s heading toward a man jogging and the man sees the truck and bends down quickly. The truck is about to hit.

F/X CAR HORN

ABURPT CUT TO:

INT. SCOTT’S CAR AT A RED LIGHT – DAY

The light is green and Scott is sitting there and a person honks for him to go. He pulls up to the hardware store and heads in. The same store clerk is there and Scott lets out a sigh. He walks up to talk to her.

SCOTT
I need to exchange this.

STORE CLERK
(rudely)
You can’t exchange that.

SCOTT
Are you serious? Why not.

STORE CLERK
All aerosol cans are
non-exchangeable.

SCOTT
So, I’m going to have to buy
another one?

STORE CLERK
(rudely)
Yep.

Scott goes and picks up another one and takes it up to the counter. The store clerk informs him that it will be $9.06.

SCOTT
(pissed off)
What? It was cheaper last
time.

STORE CLERK
(rudely)
I must have rang it up wrong.
Will that be all?

Scott takes a deep breath and grasps his head as though he had a quick migraine and blacks out for a second.

She slides his stuff into the bag.

STORE CLERK
(impatiently)
Now, will that be all?

Scott is stunned at her rudeness.

SCOTT
Yes.

STORE CLERK
That will be-

Scott interrupts her.

SCOTT
Just use the credit card.

STORE CLERK
Okay. Here’s your receipt,
and thank you very much.

Scott stuffs the receipt in his pocket and walks off. He heads out to his car and tosses the sack in the back seat and drives off.

CUT TO:

INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT – DAY

Brett knocks on Captain Mentis’ door and heads in.

CAPTAIN MENTIS
Shouldn’t you be at Lake
Hefner?

BRETT
Sir, I have reason to believe
Scott should be...a suspect.

CAPTAIN MENTIS
(shocked)
What?!

BRETT
The murder today, someone
was hit by a truck, and
Scott’s truck-

Captain Mentis interrupts him.

CAPTAIN MENTIS
Brett, I’m shocked you would
think such a thing. Scott is
the best detective on the team,
and you know it. Just because
he dedicates himself to a case
for sure doesn’t mean he is the
killer. That’s ridiculous.

BRETT
But sir, how is it that Scott
happens to know everything in
each case? I mean the stuff that
there’s no way one of us could
know?

CAPTAIN MENTIS
You want to know how?

BRETT
Yes sir.

CAPTAIN MENTIS
Not many people know this, but
the reason Scott is good like he
(MORE)
CAPTAIN MENTIS (cont’d)
is, is because he has these...
headaches. I’m not really sure,
he hasn’t told me directly what
they are, but he sees the murder
in his head. He doesn’t know why
but he does. He is able to...
sense things from the crime
scene. It’s an ability I wish
everyone had here.

Brett is quiet and thinks to himself for a second.

BRETT
What if he sees the murders
because he is the-

Captain Mentis interrupts him again.

CAPTAIN MENTIS
You know what Brett, you going
to sit this case out and let
Scott finish it up.

BRETT
Sir.

CAPTAIN MENTIS
I mean it. Now go.

Brett gets up and mumbles something to himself as he leaves the Captain Mentis’ office.

BRETT
(quietly to
himself)
I’m going to solve this myself.

THURSDAY

INT. SCOTT’S HOUSE – DAY

Scott is calling his doctor about the headaches he has been getting lately.

SCOTT
Hello, my I speak to Dr. Crow?

LADY
Yes, one moment.

SCOTT
Okay.

DR. CROW
Hello?

SCOTT
Hey Dr. Crow its Scott.

DR. CROW
Oh hey Scott how you been?

SCOTT
Not to great actually.

DR. CROW
What seems to be the problem?

SCOTT
You know my headaches I used
to get?

DR. CROW
Oh yes, the headaches.

SCOTT
Well, they are back, and quite
often.

DR. CROW
What do you think is the cause
of this?

SCOTT
Work has been pretty intense
lately. I’m guessing that’s it.

DR. CROW
Scott, you want to know how to
cure your headaches?

SCOTT
Heh, yes.

DR. CROW
Take a vacation. Go somewhere.
You need to take a break from
your job. You have a very high
stress job Scott, it’s not
healthy at all.

SCOTT
I know, but I can’t right now.

DR. CROW
Your going to have to sometime.

SCOTT
I’m close to solving this case
and it’s a big one. After this
case I’ll take a break. I might
get another job in a bigger city.

DR. CROW
No, you need to quit. And you
don’t need to move to a bigger
city. Take a vacation, a long
one, move into a small town for
a little while.

Scott gets a call on his cell phone from Michael.

SCOTT
Thank you Dr. Crow but I have to
go. Really, thank you for your
help.

DR. CROW
Scott, please choose the right
decision. It’s not healthy.

SCOTT
Thank you sir.

DR. CROW
No problem. Bye.

SCOTT
Bye.

Scott answers his cell phone.

SCOTT
Hello?

MICHAEL
Scott.

SCOTT
Not again.

MICHAEL
Ya, And this one is pretty bad.

Scott shakes his head in disbelief.

SCOTT
I’ll head down there right now.
Where you at?

MICHAEL
You know those woods off of
Coltrane?

SCOTT
Yea?

MICHAEL
We are about fifty feet straight
in from my car.

SCOTT
Okay, see you in a sec.

MICHAEL
Bye.

SCOTT
Bye.

Scott goes to his truck and drives down there.

CUT TO:

EXT. WOODS – DAY

Scott pulls up behind Michael and heads through the woods. Scott meets up with Michael.

MICHAEL
Hey, man. This is the worst yet.

SCOTT
What do you mean?

MICHAEL
You have to see it for yourself.

Scott and Michael head over to the victim.

It’s a girl who has her hands tied behind her back and has a bag over her head. Her throat is slit and she has blood all over her.

Scott has another migraine and has a flashback of the murders.

CUT TO:

EXT. WOODS – NIGHT

FLASHBACK of a guy in a white mask pulling a girl out of a vehicle, you cannot see what type of vehicle it is. She has duct tape on her mouth and has her hands tied behind her back and is squirming around. He drags her into the woods and stands her up facing the other direction of him. She is crying and the masked man loosens up for a moment and his hands drop to his sides. Then he pulls a sack from out of his hoodie, puts in on her head, and cuts her throat.

EXT. WOODS – DAY

MICHAEL
(yelling)
Scott!

Scott quickly wakes up from his blackout.

SCOTT
What?

MICHAEL
You went dead on me for a
second.

It is quiet for a moment.

SCOTT
What do we know?

MICHAEL
Well, we found the knife used
to cut her throat.

He walks over and picks up a bag with a knife in it.

MICHAEL
It was right next to her. It’s
as if they wanted us to find
it.

Michael hands the knife to a cop.

MICHAEL
Send this to the lab right now.

COP
Yes sir.

The cop runs off. They both look around for a second. Another cop jogs up and talks to them.

COP
Hey, we got something.

MICHAEL
What?

COP
The knife, duct tape, and
rope are all from that
hardware store over on 122nd.

Scott’s eyes go directly to the cop and he gets nervous.

COP
And get this, the girl worked
at that hardware store.

Scott gets even more nervous.

SCOTT
(nervously)
Who’s the girl?

Michael heads over to the girl and turns her over. The girl is the store clerk from the hardware store that Scott had run ins with the other day.

Scott’s face turns pale. He becomes very nervous.

MICHAEL
You ok?

Scott doesn’t answer.

MICHAEL
Scott, are you ok man?

Scott backs up and starts walking to his car.

SCOTT
Michael, I have to go somewhere
right now.

MICHAEL
(angrily)
Scott. You just got here. You
have a job to do.

Scott starting to jog.

SCOTT
Michael, you don’t understand.
I must go.

Scott gets in his truck and drives off very fast. Michael shakes his head in disbelief and anger.

Where did I put that receipt?

He thinks for a second.

COP
Hey Brett, we got a witness.

A girl walks up and Brett walks up to her.

BRETT
Did you see what happened?

She is quiet.

BRETT
Ma’am, I must know what you
saw.

She tears up, and looks away and then talks.

GIRL
I saw the guy get out of a red
truck and drag a girl into the
woods.

Brett looks intrigued.

BRETT
Did you see the red truck that
was here a few minutes ago?

She lets out a cry.

GIRL
Yes.

BRETT
Was it the same truck?

Again she lets out a cry.

GIRL
Yes.

BRETT
Are you 100% positive?

GIRL
I saw his dented bumper last
night, and I saw it just a
second ago.

Brett puts his hand on her shoulder.

BRETT
Ma’am I must go, I can’t
thank you enough for what
you have just told me.

He motions at a cop.

BRETT
(at cop)
Hey! Get this girl’s statement.
Ma’am thank you again.

She nods and wipes her tears off. Brett runs quickly to his car and heads off.

CUT TO:

SCOTT
How the hell did I not
notice?

He thinks for a second.

INT. HARDWARE STORE – DAY

STORE CLERK

Scott interrupts her.

SCOTT
Just use the credit card.

and thank you very much.

INT. SCOTT’S TRUCK – DAY

Scott doesn’t believe himself.

SCOTT
There is no way.

Scott pulls up in his driveway and runs inside.

INT. SCOTT’S HOUSE – DAY

He goes into the bathroom and washes his face. When he comes up to look he turns into the masked man for a second. He is startled and falls back.

SCOTT
This isn’t happening.

He walks to his kitchen and when he walks past his chair the masked man is sitting there. Scott quickly draws his gun.

SCOTT
(nervously)
FREEZE!

The masked man doesn’t move. He just sits there quietly and blinks a few times.

SCOTT
Who are you?

MASKED MAN
You should know by now.

SCOTT
Well, I don’t. Remove your
mask now.
The masked man sits there and then slowly takes off his mask. It is Scott sitting in the chair.

SCOTT
(confused)
What..the..hell...

MASKED SCOTT
I’m you. Your me. Scott,
I am Scott.

Scott is confused and is shaking from nervousness.

SCOTT
This is impossible.

MASKED SCOTT
Scott, you are crazy. Or
I should say we are crazy.

SCOTT
No. No. No. This can’t be
happening. I did not kill those
people.

MASKED SCOTT
Yes you did. Why do you think
you can remember them so vividly
in your dreams and daydreams?
You can because you were there.
You can because you witnessed it.

Scott is shaking his head.

MASKED SCOTT
You can because you killed them.

Scott holds up gun and is about to shoot.

EXT. SCOTT’S HOUSE – DAY

Brett pulls up and gets out of his car. Brett can see Scott in the window pointing a gun at somebody but cannot see who is in the chair due to the fact the chair is facing the other way. Brett looks around for a way to go around back. He notices the side of the house has a gate and runs through it.

INT. SCOTT’S HOUSE – DAY

SCOTT
(nervously)
I’ll just shoot you.

The Masked Scott lets out a little laugh.

MASKED SCOTT
If you shoot me, you will kill
both of us.

Scott hesitates for a moment.

EXT. SCOTT’S HOUSE – DAY

Brett comes up to the back door and opens it quietly.

INT. SCOTT’S HOUSE – DAY

Brett creeps through the living room to the kitchen.

SCOTT
I’d rather kill us both then
other people.

The Masked Scott lets out another little laugh.

MASKED SCOTT
How considerate of you, but,
you won’t do it, or shall I say
we won’t do it.

Scott raises gun.

CLOSE UP on his hand and the gun. CLOSE UP on Scott’s sweat dripping from his head.

MASKED SCOTT
You won’t do it.
(angrily)
DO IT!

Brett sees through the kitchen and notices Scott standing in the other room holding the gun and Brett raises his gun. He doesn’t say anything and aims at Scott.

Scott holds up gun, harder and more confident than ever before. Scott closes his eyes and yells and slowly begins to pull the trigger.

BLACK OUT

EXT. WOODS – DAY

Michael is marking evidence and a cop on his phone comes running up to him at full speed.

COP
(yells)
Detective Schizo!

Michael turns around.

COP
Detective Schizo.

MICHAEL
Yes?

COP
The lab just called. We have
a match.

Michael looks up in amazement and happiness.

MICHAEL
Who is it?

The cop hesitates and doesn’t say anything for a second.

MICHAEL
Well?

COP
You won’t believe this.

MICHAEL
What?

The cop hesitates again.

MICHAEL
(impatiently)
Spit it out.

COP
..It’s Detective Phren sir.

Michael doesn’t move. He is in shock.

COP
And, he was at the hardware
store yesterday. And, he picked
up the knife, that rope, and
that duct tape. It’s been him
sir.

Michael is still in shock and doesn’t move. His phone rings. He snaps out of it and answers it.

MICHAEL
(somberly)
Hello.

CAPTAIN MENTIS
Michael. Did you hear?

MICHAEL
Yes.

CAPTAIN MENTIS
We have to take him down. But,
I want you to break it to him.

MICHAEL
Yes sir. Wait, he ran off a
couple minutes though sir. I
think he is at his house.

CAPTAIN MENTIS
He is, Brett’s car’s radio sent
out a distress call a minute ago
is there but he won’t answer his
phone.

Michael is nervous.

MICHAEL
Sir, Brett will kill him.

CAPTAIN MENTIS
I know. That means you need to
hurry. The calvalry is about to
head out.

MICHAEL
Okay, I’m going right now.

CAPTAIN MENTIS
Michael?

MICHAEL
Yes?

CAPTAIN MENTIS
There is going to be a reason
for all of this.

MICHAEL
I hope.

FADE OUT

CAMERA REWINDS the scene of Scott about to shoot himself and Brett raising his gun. Then, replays the scene in normal speed.

CLOSE UP on his hand and the gun. CLOSE UP on Scott’s sweat dripping from his head.

You won’t do it.
(angrily)
DO IT!

Scott holds up gun, harder and more confident than ever before. Scott closes his eyes and yells and slowly begins to pull the trigger.

Brett shoots Scott in the leg and Scott drops his gun and falls to the ground.

Brett runs over to him, with his gun drawn, to see if he is ok.

Scott sees Brett, looks at his leg, and then bends up and looks at the chair where the Masked Scott was sitting. He isn’t there.

BRETT
(yells)
HEY! Don’t move.

SCOTT
I did it.

Scott gets a migraine, the worst one yet, and rubs his head. The migraine then suddenly goes away and Scott looks up with a blank face.

BRETT
Don’t move!

SCOTT
Brett, it’s ok.

BRETT
Why’d you do it?

SCOTT
You wouldn’t understand.

BRETT
That won’t work in court
my friend.

Brett’s gun is still drawn, he walks over and kicks Scott’s away.

SCOTT
I know Brett. I’m ready for
the consequences of what I’ve
done.

BRETT
You better be.

Scott looks at his leg and lets out a mild moan.

SCOTT
Will you hurry up so I don’t
bleed to death.

BRETT
Of course, I wouldn’t want that
to happen. That would be too
easy on you.

Scott smiles.

INT. MICHAEL’S CAR – DAY

Michael is driving very fast to Scott’s house and sends out a radio message to the other cops.

MICHAEL
Okay guys, this is a friend.
You do not shoot unless I say
so. I repeat, DO NOT shoot
unless I give the ok. As much
as you can’t let feelings get
involved, you can’t help it
with this one. Don’t take it
too hard guys.

INT. SCOTT’S HOUSE – DAY

Brett lifts him up.

BRETT
Hey.

SCOTT
(tired/impatient)
Yes?

BRETT
Thank you for going in like
this, cooperating and stuff.

SCOTT
(sarcastically)
Yeah.

BRETT
And I didn’t want to shoot
you but you were freaking
out with that gun in your
hand.

SCOTT
Ya. I know,
(sarcastically)
You didn’t want to shoot me.
